The Legacy of Governor Mario Cuomo

Former Governor of New York Mario Cuomo passed away on January 1, 2015. Our founder and president, George McDonald, and Executive Vice President Harriet McDonald released the following statement in memory of his life and work.

Yesterday, we lost a great friend and extraordinary man.

Mario Cuomo, 52nd Governor of the State of New York, dedicated his life to serving the people of our city and state. He was also one of The Doe Fund’s longest and most generous supporters.

His leadership defined an era: He fought tirelessly for those struggling in poverty and for all who worked for opportunity and success. His own story— from humble roots in Briarwood Queens, to the first Italian-American to lead New York— has inspired millions to advocate for others, including us.

Governor Cuomo was a dear friend who honored us with his friendship and wisdom for over twenty years. He welcomed and encouraged the “men in blue” who proudly worked outside his home, each day.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cuomo family. We mourn his passing and celebrate his legacy as one of the greatest political leaders and advocates of the 20th century.
