Celebrating 27 Years of Impact and Innovation

In the heart of every person lies the potential for transformation, no matter where they come from or what path they’ve walked. Donald Pendleton, The Doe Fund’s longtime Director of Housing and Recruitment, knows that more than most.

Donald’s life began in a middle-class family with two loving parents and a sister. But what he describes as the “lure of the streets” led him astray, down a path of drug addiction and incarceration.

“Even though I didn’t come from hardship,” Donald said, “I still succumbed to the streets. It’s a reminder that anyone can get lost if they’re not careful.”

The turning point came through four influential figures in Donald’s life. One of them was Carl, a former partner in crime who reformed and told him about a job opportunity with a then-new program called Ready, Willing and Able. Donald met the second, Debbie, in his interview. He remembers her words like it was yesterday: “We can teach you how to do the paperwork; we need you to teach our population what you’ve learned about life.”

Throughout his years of service, Donald received support from his Doe Fund family. “Their faith in me gave me the strength to believe in myself and in the power of redemption,” he told us. For 27 years, Donald used that belief to help program participants reunite with their families, alongside a dedicated staff who shared his commitment. Though not a Ready, Willing & Able graduate himself, Donald’s lived experience made him a credible messenger to thousands of trainees looking to transform their lives.

“When you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. I guess I never worked at The Doe Fund, per se,” Donald said. “What I’ve done for 27 years is use the belief clients have in me to assist them in making a difference in their lives.”

Donald continued, “I will miss seeing the moment when they realize you weren’t feeding them lies and now are willing to give you their trust. I will miss meeting, nurturing and mentoring that client to the successful stage of graduation!”

Donald’s goals for the near future are simple but meaningful: enjoy life with his better half, travel, spoil his grandchildren and stay active with hobbies like competitive bowling and working out.

To his colleagues at The Doe Fund, Donald expresses deep gratitude for the love, well wishes, concern, comfort, and friendship extended throughout his journey. He particularly mentions those who joined him on his initial Harlem journey in 1996: Orisha Jordan, Nazerine Griffin, Craig Trotta, Jennifer Mitchell, and the rest of the staff for their unwavering support.

Finally, Donald has words of wisdom for all current and future Doe Fund trainees: “Take care of your business; don’t let it take care of you.” He emphasizes the importance of planning for success and keeping an open mind to learn from everyone.

Donald, we thank you for your years of dedication and we wish you happiness and fulfillment in your well-deserved retirement!
